Styes
A stye is a tender bump on the eyelid. Eye pain or changes in vision need a different level of attention from a small localized lid bump.
Common symptoms
- Tender eyelid bump
- Localized redness or swelling
- Watery eye or a gritty feeling
A useful care conversation
Describe the location, duration and any drainage or spreading swelling. A clear optional photo can help show the eyelid, but it does not replace an eye examination. The clinician can discuss eyelid care and whether an examination is needed.
When to seek more care
- Arrange prompt eye care for vision changes, significant eye pain, light sensitivity or swelling that spreads.
- Get reassessed if the bump or discomfort is worsening or not improving.
