Rashes and skin irritation
An itchy or irritated patch may follow a new product, exposure or illness. The pattern and timing help guide the next step.
Common symptoms
- Redness of the skin
- Itching
- Swelling (sometimes)
- Dry, scaly, or bumpy skin
A useful care conversation
Share where it started, how it has changed and any new medicines, skin products or exposures. A photo may help show the pattern. The clinician can discuss skin care and whether the rash needs an examination; an image alone may not identify its cause.
When to seek more care
- Call 911 for trouble breathing or swelling of the tongue or throat.
- Get prompt care for a painful, widespread or blistering rash, fever, or spreading signs of infection.
