Ringworm
Ringworm is a fungal skin infection, despite its name. A ring-shaped rash can have other causes, so its appearance does not always settle the diagnosis.
Common symptoms
- Itchy, scaly, or raised patches
- Circular rash with a clear center
- Redness
- Sometimes, small bumps or blisters
A useful care conversation
Describe the rash location, spread, itch and contact with affected people or animals. Mention treatments already used. A clinician may review a photo and discuss antifungal care or whether testing and an examination are needed. Avoid using steroid cream for a suspected fungal rash without advice.
When to seek more care
- Get assessed for worsening or spreading patches, fever, swelling or pus, or a rash that is not improving with treatment.
