Shingles concerns

Shingles can cause a painful, blistering rash, often on one side of the body. A new rash needs timely assessment rather than assuming it is a familiar outbreak.

Common symptoms
  • Painful rash on one side of the body
  • Blisters that may form a stripe or band
  • Itching or tingling
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Sometimes, fever or minor headache
A useful care conversation

Tell the clinician when pain and rash began, where they are and whether shingles has previously been diagnosed. An optional photo can support the discussion. The clinician can decide whether treatment or an in-person examination is appropriate; early contact matters.

When to seek more care
  • Seek urgent eye assessment for a rash near the eye, eye pain or vision changes.
  • Get prompt care for a first suspected episode, severe pain, spreading rash or signs of infection.

General educational information, not a diagnosis or a complete symptom checker. The right care depends on your circumstances.

For an emergency, call 911. Do not wait for a Tap reply or send a photo first.
