Urinary tract infections
Burning and frequent urination can occur with a bladder infection. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, and urine appearance or odor alone does not establish the diagnosis.
Common symptoms
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Frequent or urgent trips to the bathroom
- Lower-abdominal pressure or discomfort
- Feeling that the bladder has not emptied
A useful care conversation
Tell the clinician about symptom timing, pregnancy possibility, fever, side or back pain, past infections and recent antibiotics. Treatment depends on that assessment; some people need urine testing or an examination. A prescription is not automatic.

- Seek prompt in-person care for fever, side or back pain, vomiting, recurrent infections or symptoms that worsen despite treatment.
