Yeast infections
Vaginal itching and irritation deserve a clear assessment. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so symptoms alone do not confirm a yeast infection.
Common symptoms
- Vaginal itching
- Burning or irritation
- Thick, white discharge
- Redness of the vulva or surrounding area
- Painful urination or intercourse (sometimes)
A useful care conversation
Describe the discharge, when symptoms began, previous episodes and any treatments already tried. Mention pregnancy, recent antibiotics and other health conditions. The clinician can discuss symptom relief and whether testing or an examination is needed before choosing treatment.
