When to call 911 for a sick child
Call 911 if your child:
- Cannot breathe, is gasping, or their lips look blue
- Has a seizure, or you cannot wake them
- Has a stiff neck, a bad headache, and a fever
- Has a head, neck, or spine injury
- Is bleeding heavily, or swallowed something that is stuck
- Has a severe allergic reaction (swelling, wheeze, collapse)

Who to call first
Attendance and note rules change by school, by district, and sometimes by grade. Use the school’s website or call the front office. Do not trust a parent group online. A typical sick-day sequence looks like this:
- Keep the child home if they have a fever, vomiting, or cannot stay in class
- Log the absence that morning through the school’s attendance system
- Ask the office whether this specific absence needs a doctor’s note
- Book a clinic or telehealth visit only if the school said yes
If they are sick but not in danger
A fever, a sore throat, an earache, a stomach bug, or a bad cold is usually not an emergency. Rest at home and offer fluids. If a fever will not come down, wet diapers drop off, or your child gets much worse quickly, go to urgent care or an emergency room. You do not need an ambulance for a school note.

What the school note is for
A school note excuses the absence. The office does not need a diagnosis. It needs the date the child was out and the date they can return.
